Margret (Mom to me) welches born in Poland in 1958, in hard times. She knew what it was like to struggle, so she never took anything for granted. She taught her two daughters to do the same - to enjoy the good times, prepare for the hard times, and cultivate strong relationships.This last one came naturally to Mom. From those whom she had just met to others who knew her for years, everyone sensed that Mom cared - and this drew them to her. For example, when she decided to leave a job cleaning the office of an executive at a major car manufacturer, his secretary begged her to stay. She t rusted Mom immensely and had grown accustomed to their refreshing chats. Mom still decided to move on, but she had left a lasting impression. That secretary never lost contact, periodically stopping by Moms home to catch up over a cup of coffee.Or how about Laurie and Verdis, the couple Mom made friends with on one family vacation to Hawaii. Laurie had been introduced as a friend of a friend, but she and Mom quickly became close. They were soon inseparable, and when the vacation was over, both were in tears as they said goodbye. Mom and Laurie stayed in regular contact over the years, mostly through letters and emails. None of that may sound extraordinary, except for one small detail Mom didnt speak English. Its possible to request atransfer from a National Guard unit to an NG unit in another state, and such transfers happen all the time. The Transfering Process Notification. Notify current National Guard unit that youre relocating to another state. Clear Supply. Turn-in everything issued to you by your unit (TA-50, etc.) but not clothing. Begin Coordination. Your unit should notify your states Interstate Transfer Coordinator (ist los). The IST will locate possible choices of units to which you may transfer. A coordinated transfer between states can be accomplished prior to your relocation c ompleting the NGB Form 22-5-R-E, Interstate Transfer Agreement. Uncoordinated Transfer So, what happens if a National Guard member moves to another state without prior coordination of a transfer? Sometimes a National Guard member relocates quickly without the transfer process being completed. In this case, you should request an excused absence from training for 90 days in order to find a new National Guard unit and execute a transfer. Your current unit should notify the Interstate Transfer (IST) Coordinator in the state of your new address and telephone number. Remember that you are required to attend all scheduled training with your current unit unless properly excused. The IST Coordinator in your new state will assist with your reassignment once you have moved to your new location. One of states local National Guard recruiters may also assist you in locating a new unit. Other Matters In many cases, one can change to a different MOS/AFSC if there is a vacancy in the gaining unit and if you meet the prerequisites (color vision, test scores, security clearance, etc.) for that MOS/AFSC. You can retain your current rank if youre E6 or below. E7s must be placed in a vacant E7 position. If youre currently contracted for (and eligible) for a dreingabe, then you should be able to retain that eligibility when you move to the new state, as long as you ensure the following If your bonus contract is for a specific MOS/AFSC, then you must remain in that MOS/AFSCIf your bonus contract is for a specific type unit (bonus unit), then you must transfer to a bonus eligible unit within the new state. Failure to remain in a bonus eligible MOS/AFSC or Bonus Unit can result in temporary suspension of payments or perhaps termination from the bonus program. Suggestions Dont close your current bank account youve established for direct deposit. Wait until youve received at least one paycheck deposited into a new account before closing the old.Instead of electing 90 days exc used absence (without pay) during the relocation process, you may request to attend drills with a National Guard unit in your new state until a transfer is completed. It takes prior coordination between units, but its not a difficult process. Youll be paid through your current unit, even though youre split-training with a unit in your new state. These are but a few of the many names made famous through the tragic use of force by police. And yes, regardless of wherbeie one may stand on the merits of each individual case, we can rightly call each and every instance of law enforcement-related deaths tragic. Theyre tragic because no child grows up expecting and certainly bedrngnis wanting to lose his life at the hands of the police. And theyre tragic because no truly dedicated police officer no matter how stringent, strict, or rigid goes to work on any given day hoping to take someones life. Does the Public Support the Police? If Youtube, social media and news outlets are to be believed, the members of the public in the United States are losing trust and confidence in law enforcement across the country. Though it may be of little solace, this is not the first time faith in the police forces have waned, and it likely wont be the last. The late 1960s and 70s saw a very vocal outcry against seemingly heavy-handed tactics by police, only to see that respect return through much of the 1980s. It fell away again after Rodney Kings beating in Los Angeles in the early 90s. Once again, though, that respect and faith returned, and immediately after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks law enforcement at all levels received near-unprecedented support. For all the talk about public distrust of police, a 2011-2014 Gallup poll revealed that overall, 56 percent of the American public still hold police in high regard, receiving the third-highest indication of confidence in an institution behind the U.S. military and small business. Nonetheless, it is safe to say that something of a disconnect exists between police and their communities in some regards. What Does the Public Expect from Police Officers? So what, then, can our profession and the criminal justice industry learn f rom the rise, fall, and rise again of support for policing in our communities? From anger over recent police shootings and past transgressions by officers, we can know that our public expects us to use the minimum force necessary to bring an event to a peaceful conclusion and that, in the event that a police officer must use force, especially deadly force, it should be clearly and unambiguously necessary to do so. Policing is a Dangerous Job Police, of course, understand that nearly every encounter with civilians is fluid, dynamic, and potentially wrought with danger. Though its quite true that the vast majority of people a police officer may encounter in any given day on the job will pose no threat and offer nothing but compliance, that officer can never know when or if theyre dealing with that one individual who is determined to do her harm. No Matter How Well-Intentioned, Police Can Be Their Own Worst Enemy The public and the pundits, too, know this, at least in the abstr act. However, whereas once a police officers word was almost all that was needed to determine his use of force was justified, the proliferation of video recording beginning with Rodney King and only growing from there police must come to terms with the fact that the picture presented in those videos has not always matched the final report. And while it would be foolish and irresponsible to suggest coverups were once functions of the standard operating procedures of the day, its also easy to see why and how some elements of the public may have formed that view. Why Police and the Public Arent Always on the Same Page All of this talk, then, begs the question where is the disconnect? Officers understand the incredible responsibility they have to protect and serve, and the overwhelming majority of them are wonderful people who have chosen the profession of law enforcement because they wanted to do the right thing for the right reasons. The issue may be found in how so many police recruits are trained combined with the unfortunate but near-inevitable fact that once-idealistic and enthusiastic officers can become so jaded and disaffected after years of interacting so intimately with crime and human tragedy. Because police officers are very likely to encounter dangerous individuals as a necessary part of the job, they are appropriately taught from day one and this is reinforced their entire careers that their number one goal is to make it home at the end of their shifts. This sort of training and culture correctly imparts the importance of officer safety to new police, but it leaves out a critical component, and that is the hierarchy of responsibility officers bare for the safety of everyone. When responding to or investigating any situation, responders are concerned with the safety of the victims, witnesses, and innocent bystanders first, their own safety second, and finally the subject, suspect or violator third. But they must be concerned with the suspects safety nonetheless. The Real Goal of Law Enforcement Every officer should be focused on getting home safely at the end of her shift. But as Sir Robert Peel first expressed in his principles of policing, the real goal of law enforcement is to obtain voluntary compliance with the law. Officers can apply this concept in their day-to-day interactions by making it their goal to make sure everyonein the police encounter gets home (or jail, mental health facility or other appropriate venue as necessary) at the end of the interaction. How then, can officers accomplish this goal and ensure their safety? First off, understand that there is no 100 percent solution. No matter what, there are - and will continue to be - people who will force officers to use force, up to and including deadly force, regardless of what the officer does. In those cases, for the sake of the public and the police, officers must not hesitate to act to counter any threat as quickly and efficiently as possible. Howe ver, too many officers forget their training and find themselves in lages where force quickly becomes their only option. This can be said of many, if not all, of therecentcases of so-called policeviolence that has been the source of such outrage. No matter what police academy an officer attends, she will most certainly be taught basic principles of officer safety, specifically for the purposes of keeping herself in a position of physical and psychological advantage to immediately defeat even so much as a thought of defiance through the use of distance, cover, command presence and professional behavior. The idea here is not to avoid force, but, as much as possible, eliminate the need for it to begin with. Time For Police to Get Back to the Basics The simple fact is that the public is demanding a change in how police do business. The good news is, this doesnt necessitate a major change in culture or even training. Rather, it means a change in emphasis. Officers and departments ali ke already emphasize tactics over tempers.That, coupled with an emphasis on officers reverting to their original training as opposed to the learned habits and behaviors theyve acquired, can demonstrate the true dedication of the police to public. Often, its up to you - the recipient - to interpret how you can use these suggestions to grow in your career.At MovingWorlds Institute, we train mid-career professionals in leadership development, and we possess a formula for this common career dilemma. In our Global Leadership Fellowship, we teach professionals the Think Back, Think Through, and Think Forward method for feedback.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIll work through each step, imagining that the feedback provided to you was that you didnt contribute to an important meeting.Think backThe intention in this stage is to simply state what happened, and brainstorm in a pressure-free environment what should have happened. Try not to attach any judgment to what youre describing, but rather approach this as if you were a neutral third-party. The idea here is that this will help you focus on the underlying behavior that youre trying to develop, without creating emotional reactions that can be destructive. The questions to ask yourself during this stage areWhat happened?What are the facts about the auffhrung(s) that prompted the feedback?Your VP had asked the table for ideas, but you didnt speak up.What thoughts did you have?What were you thinking about and considering during this event?Perhaps you were thinking youre idea was too out of the box and would make you look out of sync.How were you feeling?What emotions and physiological responses were you experiencing during this event?This could be something like that you had sweaty palms and were feeling nervous.Think throughAt this stage, the goal is to identify the ideal action(s) you could have taken instead. Look at the gaps between the actions you took in the moment and alternative actions you could have taken will help you pinpoint the specific underlying behavior that you need to developWhat did you do? How did your actions appear to others?It probably looked like you werent engaged, because you said nothing.What should you have done? What could you have done differently?You could have shared your idea. Additionally, if youre still not sure it wouldve made sense, another option would have been to contribute to the meeting with one (or more) thoughtful question(s).What blocked you? What underlying behavior or scenario kept you from doing the thing(s) you should have done?This might be feelings of insecurity or fear, or something more systemic, like a lack of structure in the meeting.Think forwardAt this last stage of the reflective process, you want to envision what you will do next time youre in a similar situation.What will you do next time? Imagine that youre in a similar situation next week. Visu alize the scenario in your mind and note what emotional reactions and thought processes this exercise triggers. Are you prepared to manage your feelings and take a different action than you did before?This might be suggesting an idea, asking a question, or perhaps proactively addressing a systemic issue, like proposing all meetings have an agenda emailed in advance so people have the opportunity to prepare more thoroughly.How can you prepare? What can you do to prepare and manage your gut reactions, emotions, and physiological responses?You could come up with a list of questions that might be asked in the next meeting, and then practice responding to this to build confidence in speaking up.How can you stick to your intention? How can you leverage your strengths and overcome obstacles to do the thing you are intending to do?You might practice on your own and or with a colleague, mentor, or friend in advance of your next meeting.As a final step, make sure to take time to write this al l down and share your goals with a trusted friend or colleague to help keep you accountable. 5 Career Ruts Everyone Gets Into at Some Point - The Muse5 Career Ruts Everyone Gets Into at Some PointBeing stuck in a rut sucks. If theres one thing I could wish for you, its that you never have to deal with a situation that holds you back from being happy, successful, or fulfilled.That, unfortunately, is an unrealistic wish (even mora unrealistic than wishing I could turn everything I touch into chocolate). Because like failure, ruts are inevitable. And the good news about that not-so-fun fact is that they ultimately help make us stronger, smarter, and mora successful individuals.Just look at a few people in your life who you admire- how many of them went through a struggle that forced them to reevaluate their goals or path? Since Im someone who doesnt love surprises (except the birthday kind), Im going to tell you right now exactly which ruts youll find yourself in throughout your career. 1. Being BoredNo matter how much you love your job, how many hours you work, or how large th e pile of to-dos is on your desk, there will come a time when you will find yourself suddenly underwhelmed, unmotivated, or unstimulated at your job for days on end. It could be for a number of reasons. Maybe your boss has stopped challenging you. Or, maybe youre making the mistake of not seeking out challenges, or looking for exciting projects. Or, maybe youve found yourself in a new role that isnt as exciting as you thought it would be.Whatever the reason, boredom is usually pretty fixable. You can ask your boss for better projects, or see if you can chip in on what other teams are working on, or find ways to keep learning, like taking online classes or attending conferences related to your industry. If that mucksmuschenstill leaves you no better than you were before, it may be time to move on and find a role thats more engaging.2. Feeling UnhappyUnhappiness is a more serious sign to keep an eye on. Why is it so much more common than we realize? Because for one, were fickle beings - were always changing our minds and shifting our priorities. Which means the things we want in our careers now may change one, two, five years from now. Thats OKThe other reason is because sometimes were really badeanstalt at recognizing when were miserable. Well place the blame on other things (woke up on the wrong side of the bed, had a bad commute, a crazy boss) rather than accept that something bigger is affecting us.Figure out what is making you unhappy and use that information to decide what your next steps will be.Maybe it means transferring roles internally, changing companies, or switching industries entirely. Or maybe its even more simple than that. Maybe its talking to your boss about an overwhelming workload. Or asking your co-worker to stop talking to you when youre working at your desk. Whatever the cause, take the time to identify it and start making moves to solve it.3. Doubting Your Career PathUnless youre very lucky, you wont find yourself satisfied in the same ro le in the same industry throughout your entire career. Dont beat yourself up if youre unsure about what you want to do next- even if youve spent 10 years in your role and are now doubting everything. The good news is that its never too late to make a change, whatever that means for you. The even better news is that you dont have to have it all figured out when youre 30, 40, 50. As jngste Franklin said, When you are finished changing, youre finished. Dont be finished.4. Feeling Like Nothings Going RightEver have those months when nothings going right? You keep messing up basic tasks, your manager keeps sending your work back with heavy revisions, your co-workers keep shutting down your ideas?It could be your fault- if youre job searching, for example, and getting nowhere, it might be worth reconsidering youre approach. But it could also be due to external forces, like a company restructuring or a bad boss. If so, its worth figuring out whether these can be fixed, and if not, what ste ps you can take to better set yourself up for success.5. Having to Deal With a (Big) ChangeYour company just went through a huge merger, half your department got laid off, you got laid off, they brought in a new boss, or oyouve moved to an entirely new city for a job.One day, something major will happen that will shake up how you do things and think about your career. While its practically impossible to prepare for something like this, remember that its common. And, that its salvageable. And, that the feelings of loss and doubt and frustration and sadness wont last forever. And, that youll come out stronger and more equipped to handle anything that comes your way. If you dont believe me, read this.The last thing I want to emphasize is that its easy to feel alone when youre in these ruts, or that no one understands what youre going through. But I can confidently tell you that everyone experiences these. Why else would I write this article? So, dont be afraid to admit when youre in on e- if you dont, youll regret not making a change sooner.
